Chanen, acting as CM at Risk, built the original 66,000-sq.-ft. satellite plant for Phoenix Newspapers in Mesa, Arizona, and a subsequent 55,490 sq. ft. expansion to accommodate a third press. The Mesa plant is comprised of three four-story rooms consisting of the mailroom, the paper storage area, which holds 5,000 rolls of newsprint, and the pressrooms housing three 430-ton Goss Metroliner offset presses.
Each aspect of construction had to be orchestrated around the presses. An absolutely level concrete bed, able to tolerate a load factor of 2,000 tons when paper was loaded onto the presses and settle no more than 1/32 inch, was required. To achieve this foundation, 54 caissons were drilled 18 feet into the ground under the press area to act as stabilizers.
A two-story, 17,000-sq.-ft. circulation office building was also built during construction of the expansion.
