HERMAN CHANEN    Founder & Chairman
Even while devoting his life to building one of the nation's leading construction companies, Herman Chanen has recognized his obligations to a community that has provided his success. He has been involved in a long list of civic activities and has served on more than 50 public and private boards and commissions, each of which plays a vital role in the economic, social and cultural development of Arizona.

Since he founded his company 55 years ago, Herman Chanen has made "successes" of numerous fund raising events for social services and other nonprofit organizations. As a result, Herman Chanen has been cited with more than 50 community service awards. He was appointed to the National Board of the National Alliance of Businessmen by President Lyndon B. Johnson and also has several gubernatorial appointments for work in human services areas.

Mr. Chanen has received the Phoenix Advertising Club Man of the Year; the Human Relations Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews and the Human Relations Award from the Anti-Defamation League.

Reflective of his long standing interest in education and youth, Herman Chanen was appointed to the Arizona Board of Regents in 1984 by Governor Bruce Babbitt and assumed the presidency of that organization in 1988. Following his eight year term as a Regent, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Arizona State University in 1994.

Other awards include: The American Academy of Achievement Golden Plate Award (1965); City of Phoenix Very Outstanding Phoenician (1969); Junior Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Young Man of the Year (1962); Torch of Liberty Award (1984); The Samaritan Medical Foundation Award (1981 and 1983); induction into the Arizona Business Hall of Fame (1990) and Trends: Fabulous Phoenician Award (2000).

His interest in affordable health care has led him to serve on the board of trustees of the Barrow Neurological Foundation, the Samaritan Medical Foundation, the University Medical Center Corporation and The Arizona Heart Institute Foundation (Chairman).

Mr. Chanen was a founding member of the Phoenix Economic Growth Corporation. He served for many years on the Valley of the Sun United Way as Vice Chairman of the Board, Director and General Campaign Chairman; was past Director of the Phoenix Symphony Association and past chairman of the Fine Arts Complex Commission for Arizona State University.

His recent business affiliations include serving on the board of directors of Bank One Arizona; director of the Arizona Economic Council and as a member and former chairman of Greater Phoenix Leadership (formerly the Phoenix 40); past National Director of the Associated General Contractors of America and past President and Director of the Arizona Building Contractors.
