Chanen provided construction management for the $157 million City of Phoenix Runway Three project at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The project was divided into nine segments involving 16 design consultants and six general contractors. The project includes the construction of the new 7,800 ft.-long by 150 ft.-wide runway and relocation of the 161st Aerial Wing of the Air National Guard. Included in construction are a new taxiway, high speed exits and cross taxiways, related aprons, full instrumentation and lighting, new ANG facilities and a three-mile section of the Salt River Outfall. A new road from 24th Street to the new Air National Guard base has been built, plus placement of storm, sanitary, water, electric, communications and gas utilities.
One of the largest items in this segment of the work is the replacement of a three-mile long section of the Salt River Outfall (SRO). The SRO carries storm runoff from the cities of Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa to the Salt River south of the airport. The existing pipeline is deteriorating. The work is complex and called for placing the pipe beneath two live taxiways as well as beneath the new third runway. This has been done by jacking the pipe beneath the taxiways to avoid having to cut them and interrupt air traffic.
Runway 3 is the first new Runway at Sky Harbor International Airport in decades.
